New York City

New York City (NYC) is a large metropolitan city situated in the state of NY in the United States. Today NYC is the most populous city in the entirety of the United States. The estimated population in 2018 was said to be upwards of 8 million people distributed over only 302 square miles making this city also the most densely populated city in the United States.

Not only is NYC an icon of American success and embedded in the very definition of glamour, fame, money, and popularity, but also serves as the cultural, financial, and media capital of the world. The influence of this city of this city has major ramifications on commerce, entertainment, research, technology, education, politics, tourism, art, fashion, and sports. Serving as the headquarters of the UN and one of the world’s largest natural harbors it is without a doubt that NYC is one of the most successful cities in the world.

However, no matter how perfect NYC looks on paper or on the surface, a deeper look reveals a much sadder truth. NYC’s poverty rate is at 19%. Although this is an improvement from the original 20% it is not enough. Not only is a 1% drop in the poverty rate not enough, it has also not been achieved the right way. NYC has been known for gentrification and although this achieves a lower poverty rate, it also displaces existing populations.

These conditions obviously lead to an extremely polar socio-economic standing. Some of the population comprise the world top 1% while the other portion of the population lives under the poverty line. The alternative to lowering the poverty rate without displacement that is a side effect of gentrification is to break the poverty cycle. The city is home to over 2 million children under the age of 18. Of these children, a large percentage is not wealthy enough to afford a proper education. Helping these children overcome their obstacles that prevent them from receiving a proper education can help lower the poverty rate in this great city.

In order to achieve this goal, My Fine Mind has partnered with New York Center for Children and Homes for the Homeless in New York City. If you would like to help the greatest city in the world, donate now.
